Target

A medicine cabinet and bathroom drawers contain prescription and over-the-counter medications with mixed or unknown expiration dates and partially used containers.

Expectation

All expired or unclear medications are separated and logged, unexpired replacements are restocked into labeled compartments, and items for disposal are packaged with disposal instructions noted.

Steps
  1. 01
    Set up workspace and gather supplies
    Clear a counter, lay out the log sheet, zip-top bag, marker, and phone; put on gloves if you use them

    Inspect and sort all medication containers
    Remove each container, read the label for name, dosage, lot, and expiration date; place expired or unreadable items into the zip-top bag and group unexpired items separately

    Log expired items and determine replacements
    For each expired or unclear item, record name, strength, lot/expiry (if available), and note whether a replacement is needed or a refill must be requested

    Restock and label medication compartments
    Return unexpired medications to their designated compartments in date order, label sections with medication categories and earliest expiry, and move partial bottles to a short-term area

    Prepare disposal and update shopping/reminder list
    Seal the bag of expired items, attach a note with disposal instructions or pharmacy return intent, and add needed replacements to your shopping or refill list
