What's inside
Stabilize and mend small tears in book pages using archival mending tape when a page is torn, loose, or catching during page turns.
A book page has a tear or loose flap with misaligned edges or small detached fragments that makes the page fragile and likely to catch or tear further.
Thin paper and tiny fragments make precise alignment difficult, and applying tape risks buckling or placing adhesive into the gutter if the backing or trimming is imprecise.
Tear edges are realigned and stabilized with archival tape that does not encroach on the gutter, the page lies flat, and it can be turned without catching or additional damage.
- • Archival mending tape — 1 roll
- • Bone folder — 1
- • Tweezers — 1
- • Microspatula — 1
- • Small scissors — 1
- 01 Set up workspace and protect pagesWork on a clean flat surface with good light; slide a sheet of glassine or unprinted paper behind the torn page and support adjacent pages with extra paper so the book stays open at a safe angle.⏱ 5 min
- 02 Inspect tear and gather fragmentsExamine the tear direction and any loose fragments, use tweezers to place fragments next to the tear in their correct orientation, and decide whether the tape will be applied one side or both sides.⏱ 5 min
- 03 Cut and position archival tapeCut a tape piece slightly longer than the tear with rounded ends, lift the torn flap with the microspatula or tweezers, position the tape so it bridges the tear without touching adjacent pages, and lay the tape down from outer edge toward the gutter.⏱ 5 min
- 04 Smooth and trim the repairUse the bone folder to smooth the tape from center outward to remove air pockets, then trim any tape that extends into the gutter or beyond the page edge with small scissors without cutting the paper.⏱ 5 min
- 05 Press and verify stabilityPlace a clean glassine sheet over the repaired page and set a low-weight flat board or book on top for about 10 minutes, then check that the repair lies flat, the page turns freely, and no loose fragments remain.⏱ 10 min
