Storytime Circle Setup

Prepare the room and children for a calm, focused group storytime session; run this before each reading block.

⏱ 15 min ★ Easy
Target

Room has scattered furniture and toys, the storybook and props are in storage, and children are not seated in a circle.

Obstacle

Excited children and only one adult helper make moving furniture and settling kids difficult, and a few children may repeatedly leave the circle.

Expectation

Seating is arranged in a clear circle, the storybook and three related props are on the story mat, and all children are seated on cushions facing the reader.

Tools
  • • Storybook — 1
  • • Seating cushions — 8
  • • Story mat or rug — 1
  • • Small props basket — 1
  • • Visual timer or small bell — 1
Steps
  1. 01
    Clear the circle area
Return loose toys to bins and move extra chairs to the room edge so the central floor area is free for a seating circle.
    ⏱ 2 min
  2. 02
    Arrange seating
Place one cushion per expected child evenly in a circle around the story mat, leaving a clear space in the center for the reader and props.
    ⏱ 3 min
  3. 03
    Prepare book and props
Select the planned storybook, lay it on the story mat, choose three related props, and place them in the basket beside the mat.
    ⏱ 2 min
  4. 04
    Signal and guide children
Use the bell or a five-minute warning, then call each child by name and guide them to their cushion, helping with seating as needed.
    ⏱ 3 min
  5. 05
    Settle group and set expectations
Use a 2-minute attention-getter (call-and-response), state two simple rules ('hands to self' and 'listening ears'), and read the opening page to confirm attention.
