Shelving Trolley Wheel Inspection and Lubrication

Inspect and lubricate trolley wheels to remove debris and restore smooth rolling. Use this when wheels scrape, bind, make noise, or after heavy use.

⏱ 30 min ★ Easy
Target

One or more trolley wheels bind, squeak, roll unevenly, or have visible grime or hardened grease on the tread or bearings.

Obstacle

Dirt and hardened grease can hide under seals and around axle nuts, and some wheel designs require wheel removal with specific fasteners or Allen keys that are not immediately accessible.

Expectation

All wheels roll freely without squeak or wobble, visible debris and old grease removed, and light lubricant applied to bearings and axles with excess wiped away.

Materials
  • • Spray lubricant (light oil or silicone) — 1 can
  • • Degreaser or isopropyl alcohol — 1 bottle
  • • Disposable shop towels — 5 piece
Tools
  • • Adjustable wrench — 1
  • • Hex key set (Allen keys) — 1 set
  • • Wire brush or stiff nylon brush — 1
  • • Needle-nose pliers — 1
  • • Work gloves — 1 pair
Steps
  1. 01
    Prepare trolley and workspace
Remove all load from the trolley, place it on a flat surface, chock remaining wheels or use blocks, and gather materials and tools within reach.
    ⏱ 5 min
  2. 02
    Inspect wheels and fasteners
Visually inspect each wheel for tread damage, hardened grease, and debris; grab and wobble each wheel to detect play and spin each wheel by hand to listen for rough bearings; note any axle nuts, cotter pins, or set screws to remove.
    ⏱ 5 min
  3. 03
    Remove and clean affected wheels
If a wheel shows binding or excess grime, loosen and remove the axle fastener, take the wheel off, scrape and brush away old grease and debris, then wipe bearing races and axle with degreaser until clean and dry.
    ⏱ 10 min
  4. 04
    Lubricate and reassemble wheels
Apply a short burst of spray lubricant or a drop of light oil to bearing races and axle surfaces, reassemble the wheel and fastener to original torque or snugness, and replace any cotter pins or locking hardware.
    ⏱ 7 min
  5. 05
    Test roll and final adjustments
Roll the trolley 10 meters in a straight line and back, listen for noise and check for wobble, tighten or re-lubricate any wheel that still binds, and wipe away excess lubricant.
