Audiobook CD case and disc integrity check

Quick routine to verify the physical condition of audiobook CDs and their cases before storage, lending, or cataloging. Use when a box or shelf of discs has not been checked recently or after transit.

⏱ 30 min ★ Easy
Target

A collection of audiobook CD cases and discs is stored together and it is unknown which cases are cracked, which discs have scratches or smudges, or which discs are loose in their trays.

Obstacle

Small cracks in plastic and hairline scratches on discs can be hard to spot in diffuse light, and dirt or fingerprints can mimic damage; sorting and documenting multiple discs takes focused, repetitive checking which is easy to rush.

Expectation

Each case will be labeled intact or damaged, each disc inspected and cleaned if needed, and damaged cases/discs separated for repair or replacement with a simple inventory recorded.

Materials
  • • Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) — 1 bottle (50ml)
  • • Cotton swabs — 1 box (100)
Tools
  • • Microfiber cloth — 1
  • • Bright flashlight — 1
  • • Soft-bristled brush — 1
  • • Labels and pen — 1 set
Steps
  1. 01
Set up workspace and gather supplies
Clear a flat surface near a bright lamp, lay a towel or clean cloth, and gather the microfiber cloth, alcohol, cotton swabs, flashlight, brush, labels, and a phone or notepad for notes.
    ⏱ 3 min
  2. 02
    Inspect cases for physical damage
Open each case and inspect hinges, tray clips, and shell by holding the case at different angles under bright light; mark and separate any cases with cracks, broken clips, or loose trays.
    ⏱ 7 min
  3. 03
Inspect discs for scratches, cracks, and fit
Hold each disc up to the flashlight and rotate to check for deep scratches, cracks, crazing, warping, or hub damage and confirm the disc sits flat on the spindle; note each disc's condition.
    ⏱ 7 min
  4. 04
Clean discs and case interiors where needed
For discs with smudges (no deep scratches), dampen the microfiber cloth with a little alcohol and wipe from center to edge in straight strokes; use cotton swabs for hubs and the brush for case crevices, then air dry.
    ⏱ 6 min
  5. 05
Record results, reseat or set aside damaged items
Create a brief inventory entry for each title (good, cleaned, cracked case, scratched disc), reseat cleaned discs into intact cases, label damaged items, and place them in a repair/replacement bin.
