Book Dust Jacket Protection

Apply clear protective covers to books with damaged dust jackets and log each change in your inventory; use when you have several books with visible wear that need preservation.

⏱ 30 min ★ Medium
Target

Several books with torn, creased, or frayed dust jackets sit unprotected and the inventory lacks notes about applied covers.

Obstacle

Dust jackets vary in size and fragility, so cutting and fitting sleeves without creasing takes extra attention; working and logging at the same time causes missed or inconsistent entries.

Expectation

Each damaged dust jacket will be enclosed in a fitted clear archival sleeve and the inventory will have a dated entry for every book listing cover type and any minor repairs.

Materials
  • • Archival polypropylene book sleeves — 5 pcs
  • • Acid-free repair tape — 1 roll
Tools
  • • Sharp scissors — 1
  • • Metal ruler — 1
  • • Bone folder or soft burnisher — 1
  • • Smartphone or camera — 1
Steps
  1. 01
    Set up workspace
Clear a flat work area, lay down a clean cloth, open the digital inventory, and create a new batch entry labeled with today's date.
    ⏱ 5 min
  2. 02
    Inspect and record baseline condition
For each book, note title and author, take a close photo of the dust jacket, and record visible damage types (tear, crease, fray) in the inventory.
    ⏱ 5 min
  3. 03
    Measure and trim sleeves
Measure each book's height and fore-edge, mark the sleeve material, and trim to leave a 5 mm overlap for sealing; label trimmed sleeves to match book entries.
    ⏱ 7 min
  4. 04
    Apply sleeves and minor repairs
Slide each dust jacket into its trimmed sleeve, smooth with a bone folder to remove creases, and apply a narrow strip of acid-free tape to stabilize small tears.
    ⏱ 4 min
  5. 05
    Finalize logging and store books
Take an after photo of each jacket in its sleeve, update the inventory with cover type, tape used, and date, then return books to the shelf in order.
