Listening station headphone sanitation and audio check

Sanitize shared headphones and verify audio before each new user to reduce contamination and ensure consistent sound quality. Run this routine between sessions or whenever headphones look or sound questionable.

⏱ 20 min ★ Easy
Target

Headphones are on the station with visible oils/debris on ear pads and headband, connectors show lint, and no recent audio verification has been recorded.

Obstacle

Users frequently return headphones with oils and lint that transfer to the next user, and small debris in jacks causes crackling which is inconsistent and hard to detect without a quick, repeatable test.

Expectation

Headphones have clean, dry ear pads and headband, connectors and ports are free of debris, and stereo playback is confirmed with balanced left/right channels at a safe listening level.

Steps
  1. 01
    Visual and tactile inspection
Check ear pads, headband, cable, and connectors for visible oils, earwax, lint, tears, or frayed wires; note any physical damage and tag if it needs repair
    ⏱ 3 min
  2. 02
    Sanitize ear pads and headband
Wipe ear pads and headband with an alcohol wipe using light pressure; if using disposable covers, replace them now; let surfaces air-dry for 60 seconds and buff with a microfiber cloth
    ⏱ 5 min
  3. 03
    Clean connectors and ports
Use the brush to remove lint from jacks and cable ends, then use a cotton swab lightly moistened with alcohol to clean contacts; allow connectors to dry and visually confirm no residue remains
    ⏱ 5 min
  4. 04
    Perform a stereo audio check
Connect to the playback device, set volume to ~70% of typical maximum, play a short left-right balance and speech/music test track for 60–90 seconds, confirm left/right balance, absence of crackling, and microphone function if present; record pass/fail
    ⏱ 7 min
