What's inside
Use this routine when swapping artifacts into a display case for a scheduled rotation or special exhibit; it ensures safe handling, accurate condition records, and correct placement before sealing the case.
The case is due for rotation but some artifacts lack current condition reports, photos, or correct placement on the rotation plan.
Restricted access to the case interior and fragile, varied materials require slow, careful handling; incomplete prior documentation forces re-checking identifications and labels before moving objects.
All rotated artifacts are placed according to the rotation plan, have up-to-date condition checklist entries and reference photographs attached to their records, and the case is secured.
- • Cotton gloves — 2 pair
- • Archival labels — 20 label
- • Condition report forms — 10 sheet
- • Camera — 1
- • LED torch — 1
- • Portable hygrometer — 1
- • Soft-bristled brush — 1
- 01 Prepare workspace and equipmentPut on cotton gloves, lay out condition report forms and labels, power on camera and hygrometer, check the rotation list against accession numbers and disable the case alarm if required.⏱ 5 min
- 02 Inspect artifacts in situOpen the case and inspect each object with torch and loupe for new losses, stains, active corrosion, pest signs or mounting stress; record a concise condition rating (stable/minor/major) and notes on the form for each accession number.⏱ 10 min
- 03 Photograph and log conditionPhotograph each artifact with a scale and visible reference label, name files with accession numbers, attach or upload image filenames to the matching condition form entries, and log spot humidity/temperature readings.⏱ 10 min
- 04 Rotate artifacts and adjust mountsFollow the rotation plan to move or replace items into their new positions using supports or specified mounts, secure labels, and confirm each object sits stably without contact that could cause stress.⏱ 10 min
- 05 Finalize records and secure caseClose and lock the case, re-enable alarms, file or upload completed condition forms into the object records, return tools to storage, and wipe down the work surface with a microfiber cloth.⏱ 5 min
