What's inside
Bring order and visual consistency to a specific call number range by checking sequence, straightening spines, and removing out-of-range items. Run this routine before patron service hours, shelving audits, or shift handoffs.
Books in the designated call number range are partially out of order, some spines are misaligned or facing outward, and a few titles may be on the shelf that belong elsewhere.
Narrow shelf spacing and crowded stacks make it hard to read full call numbers and to realign spines without nudging neighboring volumes out of order. Ongoing patron activity can reintroduce misplacements while you work.
All items in the range are in correct call-number order, spines are aligned flush with the shelf front and labels face outward, and any out-of-range items are on the cart for re-shelving.

- 01 Prepare and mark rangeConfirm the start and end call numbers from shelf labels, place a temporary shelf marker at the start, and position the book cart within reach.⏱ 5 min
- 02 Scan for order and out-of-range itemsWalk the range left-to-right, read each full call number on the spine, verify ascending order, and place any mis-shelved or out-of-range items on the cart.⏱ 15 min
- 03 Align spines and adjust spacingStarting at the left of each shelf, push each spine flush with the shelf front and vertically aligned with its neighbors; correct orientation so labels face outward.⏱ 6 min
- 04 Reshelve and final verificationReshelve items from the cart into correct positions or set aside those for other ranges, then re-read the first and last three call numbers on each shelf to confirm order and alignment.⏱ 4 min
