Wet Floor Cleanup and Sign Placement

Quickly clean up small liquid spills and mark the area whenever a spill occurs in a public corridor or workspace.

⏱ 15 min ★ Easy
Target

A fresh liquid spill about 2 by 2 feet is on a hard floor in a high-traffic corridor and no warning signs are posted.

Obstacle

Absorbent materials and a mop are stored in a distant closet and people keep walking through the corridor, which risks spreading the spill and slows cleanup.

Expectation

The spill area is absorbed and cleaned, the floor is left visibly dry with no sticky residue, and two caution signs remain until the surface is safe to walk on.

Materials
  • • Paper towels or absorbent pads — 10 sheets
  • • Neutral pH floor cleaner — 1 bottle (16 oz)
  • • Disposable gloves — 1 pair
Tools
  • • Wet-floor caution signs — 2
  • • Mop and bucket — 1
Steps
  1. 01
    Secure area and post signs
Place two wet-floor caution signs at both approaches to the spill and, if possible, use a temporary barrier to redirect foot traffic away from the area.
    ⏱ 2 min
  2. 02
    Contain and absorb spill
Cover the liquid with absorbent towels or pads and blot from the edges toward the center until no pooling remains, swapping out saturated towels as needed.
    ⏱ 4 min
  3. 03
    Clean with floor cleaner
Apply one recommended dose of neutral floor cleaner, scrub the area with the mop or a microfiber cloth in overlapping passes, and change bucket water if it becomes visibly dirty.
    ⏱ 5 min
  4. 04
    Rinse, dry, and restore area
Rinse the mop or cloth in clean water and remove remaining cleaner, dry the floor by mopping with a well-wrung cloth or using a squeegee, verify there is no slipperiness, and remove signs once the surface is dry.
