Reinforce and label children's board books

Apply clear reinforcement tape to worn edges and attach a printed barcode label so books are protected and inventory-ready; use this when preparing batches for circulation or sale.

⏱ 30 min ★ Medium
Target

A stack of children's board books with frayed corners and no barcode labels sitting on a work surface.

Obstacle

Thick board pages and rounded corners make aligning tape without wrinkles difficult, and labels must be positioned and cut so the barcode remains fully visible and scannable.

Expectation

Each book has neat, flush tape reinforcement on exposed edges and a scannable barcode label placed without covering artwork.

Materials
  • • clear archival book tape — 1 roll
  • • adhesive barcode labels — 1 sheet
Tools
  • • precision scissors — 1
  • • label printer — 1
  • • smartphone with barcode scanner — 1
Steps
  1. 01

    ⏱ 5 min
  2. 02
    Inspect and mark each book
For each book inspect corners and edges, wipe dust with a dry cloth, remove loose fibers with your thumb, and mark label placement with a small pencil dot 10 mm from the bottom edge and 15 mm from the side.
    ⏱ 8 min
  3. 03
Apply reinforcement tape to edges and corners
For each book cut a tape length 1–1.5 times the edge length, align the tape flush with the outer edge, smooth from center outward with fingers or a bone folder to remove bubbles, and wrap corners with a 45-degree fold trimmed flush to the board.
    ⏱ 10 min
  4. 04
Print, trim, apply barcode labels and scan
Print barcodes on the label sheet, cut to size if needed, align each label on the marked spot, press from center outward to adhere, then scan each barcode with the smartphone app to confirm it reads.

  5. 05
    Final quality check and stack
Visually inspect each book for tape alignment and label placement, rework any with wrinkles or unreadable barcodes, then stack books with spines aligned for storage.
