Public Phone Handset Sanitization and Cord Check

Sanitize a public payphone handset and inspect its cord for visible damage before returning the phone to service; use this during between-user cleanings or routine maintenance checks.

⏱ 15 min ★ Easy
Target

Handset and cord are visibly soiled or uninspected, and the cord ends or connector may have nicks, frays, or loose fittings.

Obstacle

Small crevices around the mouthpiece and earpiece trap dirt and require careful access, and minor frays along a coiled cord can be hard to spot without directed light and close inspection.

Expectation

Handset surfaces and the accessible length of the cord are disinfected to touch and any visible damage is identified and documented for repair.

Materials
  • • Disinfectant wipes (EPA-recommended or 70% isopropyl) — 5 wipe
  • • Disposable gloves — 1 pair
Tools
  • • Flashlight — 1
Steps
  1. 01
    Prepare and don gloves
Put on disposable gloves, take out wipes and flashlight, and position yourself so you can hold the handset steady while working.
    ⏱ 1 min
  2. 02
    Inspect handset and cord
Use the flashlight to scan the earpiece, mouthpiece, cord length, and connectors for cracks, nicks, loose fittings, exposed wires, or stuck debris and note any damage.
    ⏱ 3 min
  3. 03
    Wipe handset surfaces
Wipe the earpiece, mouthpiece, sides, and receiver handle with disinfectant wipes, covering all contact surfaces until visibly clean; use fresh wipes for heavily soiled areas.
    ⏱ 5 min
  4. 04
    Clean the cord and connectors
Run wipes along the entire accessible length of the cord and over connector housings, paying attention to creases and the entry points at each end; ensure surfaces remain wet for the product's listed contact time (typically 30–60 seconds).
    ⏱ 4 min
  5. 05
    Dispose, document, and report
Remove and discard gloves, dry any excess moisture if needed, record the cleaning and any damage found, and flag the phone out of service or request repair if damage compromises safety or function.
