Intercom system test and volume calibration

Verify speaker output and set consistent volume levels across all public address zones before events or daily operations. Use objective SPL measurements so staff can rely on documented settings.

⏱ 30 min ★ Medium
Target

Some zones produce uneven loudness and the system's master and zone levels have not been measured or documented since the last configuration change.

Obstacle

Controls are distributed across a rack and wall panels and acoustic differences between zones mean a single adjustment rarely achieves the same perceived level without measuring at each location.

Expectation

Each zone reproduces a steady test tone at the agreed target SPL and recorded volume settings show final dB readings for representative listening positions.

Tools
  • • Calibrated sound level meter — 1
  • • Playback device with test tone — 1
Steps
  1. 01
    Gather gear and access panels
Collect the SPL meter and playback device, note rack and zone panel locations, unlock or gain access to the system, and set intercom to test or paging mode if available.
    ⏱ 5 min
  2. 02
    Play a standardized test tone
Connect the playback device to the intercom input or use the paging mic, play a steady 1 kHz tone at a fixed playback level, and confirm each speaker in every zone emits the tone.
    ⏱ 5 min
  3. 03
    Measure SPL at representative positions
At each zone, place the SPL meter at ear height in a typical listening spot, record the A-weighted dB reading (fast) while the tone plays, and repeat at 2–3 positions per zone.
    ⏱ 7 min
  4. 04
Adjust zone and master volumes to target
Adjust master, amplifier or zone gain controls so measured positions reach the agreed target dB (for example 75 dBA), then re-measure to confirm readings are within ±2 dB.
    ⏱ 10 min
  5. 05
Log results and restore normal operation
Document final dB readings and any faulty speakers or anomalies, write down control positions or digital gain values, stop the test tone, and perform a live voice page to confirm intelligibility.
