Obstacle

The filter may be tucked behind a grille or inside a cabinet that is awkward to open, and poor lighting or surface dust can hide the true level of dirt, making it hard to judge replacement need without photos or close inspection.

Expectation

You will have a photo and a one-sentence note describing the filter condition, a recorded decision to keep/clean/replace, and an updated next-replacement date or calendar reminder.

    Locate and access the filter
    Find the return grille or furnace access panel, open or remove it, and slide the filter out just enough to inspect while noting its installed orientation.

    Inspect and photograph both sides
    Use the flashlight to check both sides of the filter for dust build-up, holes, or discoloration; take one clear photo of each side and note the printed filter size and any date stamped on it.

    Decide action and record condition
    Compare the observed dirt level to the manufacturer's interval (or your last-change date) and choose keep/clean/replace; enter a one-sentence note with that decision and the reason into your maintenance log or notes app.
