Acid-free Boxing and Labeling of Fragile Pamphlets

Pack fragile pamphlets into archival boxes with clear exterior labels to prevent acid damage and make retrieval easier; use when preparing items for storage or transfer.

⏱ 30 min ★ Medium
Target

Multiple loose fragile pamphlets sit on the work table unprotected, with no inventory entries and visible edge wear or folded corners.

Obstacle

Pamphlets vary in size and are delicate at folds and edges, making it difficult to fit them into boxes without causing further damage; many items lack any existing catalog entry so labeling and inventorying takes extra time.

Expectation

Each fragile pamphlet is interleaved or foldered with acid-free materials and stored upright or flat inside labeled archival boxes with an inventory slip for identification.

Materials
  • • Acid-free interleaving tissue — 50 sheets
  • • Acid-free folders — 20 folders
  • • Archival labels — 10 labels
  • • Inventory slips (acid-free) — 10 slips
Tools
  • • Archival boxes — 2
  • • Bone folder — 1
  • • Cotton gloves — 1 pair
Steps
  1. 01
    Assess and sort pamphlets
Inspect each pamphlet for tears, loose pages, or active media; separate into 'fragile' and 'stable' piles and record title, dimensions, and condition on a checklist.
    ⏱ 5 min
  2. 02
    Prepare workspace and materials
Clear a flat, clean work area, lay an acid-free working sheet, put on cotton gloves, and arrange boxes, folders, tissue, labels, and inventory slips within reach.
    ⏱ 5 min
  3. 03
    Stabilize and folder individual pamphlets
Place one pamphlet on an acid-free folder trimmed to size, insert acid-free tissue between fragile pages or covers, smooth folds gently with the bone folder, then close the folder.
    ⏱ 8 min
  4. 04
    Arrange and box pamphlets
Place foldered pamphlets upright (or flat for very fragile items) in the archival box, minimize gaps and fill remaining voids with rolled acid-free tissue so items do not shift.
    ⏱ 6 min
  5. 05
    Label box and update inventory
Write exterior label with collection ID, date range, and brief contents; place an inventory slip inside the box and update the digital or paper catalog with box number and item descriptions.
