Exterior door closer tension and alignment check

A quick check and adjustment routine to verify spring tension, closing and latching speeds, and arm alignment; run this when the exterior door closes too fast, too slow, or fails to latch reliably.

⏱ 30 min ★ Medium
Target

The door currently closes unevenly or fails to latch reliably and the closer's tension and arm alignment have not been measured or adjusted.

Obstacle

Adjustment screws are often recessed and require the correct hex or screwdriver; it's hard to determine whether the issue is spring tension, closing/latching valves, or arm alignment without stepwise changes, and over-adjusting can cause slamming or failure to latch.

Expectation

After the routine the door will close at a controlled speed, the latch will engage on every close, and the closer's arm and tension settings will be documented.

Tools
  • • Phillips screwdriver — 1
  • • Hex key (Allen) set — 1 set
  • • Adjustable wrench — 1
  • • Tape measure — 1
  • • Marker or masking tape — 1
  • • Step stool — 1
Steps
  1. 01
    Initial inspection and documentation
Confirm the door is closed; inspect the closer body, arm, brackets, and frame for damage, leaks, or loose fasteners; remove the cover if present and mark the current arm position with tape and note current closing behavior.
    ⏱ 5 min
  2. 02
Check and secure fasteners and alignment
Hand-tighten all mounting screws and arm nuts until snug and add a 90-degree turn where accessible; measure arm projection and gap to the frame and record any deviation from the manufacturer's nominal dimensions.
    ⏱ 10 min
  3. 03
Adjust spring tension and speed valves
Make incremental adjustments using the correct hex key: change spring tension one notch if available, then adjust closing speed and latching speed valves by small increments (about 1/8 turn); after each single adjustment cycle the door 5 times and record the result.
    ⏱ 8 min
  4. 04
    Verify cycles and finalize settings
Cycle the door 20 times from fully open to verify controlled closing and consistent latch engagement, revert any change that causes slamming or failure to latch, secure the cover, re-tighten final fasteners, and label the final settings with marker or tape.
