Carving Your First Jack-o'-Lantern

by MASTER
A glowing jack-o'-lantern on the porch is the easiest Halloween tradition to pull off as a family, and it takes one afternoon with a pumpkin and a few cheap tools. Carve 1-3 days before October 31 so it still looks fresh on the night.

Carving Your First Jack-o'-Lantern

Match the pumpkin to the design

Pick a carving pumpkin of about 10-15 lb (4.5-7 kg) with a firm green stem, a flat bottom that doesn't rock, and no soft or wet spots. Press your thumb near the base: if it dents, put it back. For a first try, choose a design with big shapes (triangle eyes, a toothy mouth). Every strip of pumpkin left between two holes, the bridge, should be at least 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) wide, or it will snap while you saw. In Australia, Halloween falls in spring, so orange carving pumpkins can be scarce. Grab one as soon as you see it, or use a round Jap or Kent pumpkin. Their flesh is denser, so plan on extra scraping time.

Open from the back and scrape the face thin

Experienced carvers often skip the top lid and cut a hole in the back or bottom instead. The stem stays intact, nothing falls inside, and a bottom hole lets you set the pumpkin over a light. If you do cut a lid, angle the knife 45° toward the center so the lid rests on a ledge. Spend your scraping time on the face side only. Scrape it down until the wall is about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick, which you can check by pushing a pushpin straight in. Thinner walls make sawing easy for kids' arms and let more light through. Don't bother scraping the back smooth.

Saw straight in, small pieces first

Use a serrated pumpkin saw, not a kitchen knife. Hold it straight in, at 90° to the surface, and move it in short up-and-down strokes like a jigsaw. Carve the smallest, center details first and the big shapes like the mouth last, because big holes weaken the pumpkin around them. Push each cut piece out from the inside with a finger. A good split is kids drawing, scooping and poking the outline while an adult does the sawing. You'll know it went right when the edges are clean and vertical and no bridge wobbles when you touch it.

Make it last until the 31st

Rub petroleum jelly on every cut edge to slow drying and shriveling. It won't stop mold, which is why carving 1-3 days ahead matters most. Keep the pumpkin out of direct sun, and on warm days move it into a cool garage or a shaded spot. An LED tea light is the safe choice around kids and costumes. If you use a real candle, cut a quarter-sized (2.5 cm) chimney hole in the top so the lid doesn't scorch. Set it on a stable surface away from doorways and curtains. Carved pumpkins usually last 3-5 days in cool weather and 1-2 days in heat.

現在
An uncarved pumpkin sits on the table, and nobody has decided on a face or knows how thick to scrape it.
難関
The first-timer picks an intricate printed stencil with bridges thinner than 1/2 inch, and they crack off mid-carve. Or the pumpkin gets carved a week early and has caved in and gone moldy by October 31.
希望
A jack-o'-lantern with a clean, sturdy face glows from an LED light on the porch and still holds its shape on Halloween night.
対応指針
  • When a bridge or tooth cracks or breaks off while sawing
    →
Pin it back in place with a toothpick or half a bamboo skewer pushed through the broken piece into the pumpkin wall.
  • When a young child asks to use the saw or knife
    →
Hand them the scoop, the pushpin tool or the marker, and give them a job: scooping, poking the outline dots, or pushing cut pieces out from inside.
  • When the pushpin shows the wall is thicker than about 1.5 inches (4 cm) where the face goes
    →
Stop and scrape the inside of that area for another few minutes before cutting, because thick walls make the saw bind and the lines wander.

ステップ
  1. 01
Set up and choose the face
Cover the table with newspaper, then draw the face on paper or right on the pumpkin with washable marker, keeping every bridge at least 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) wide.
    ⏱ 10分
  2. 02
Cut the opening and scoop out the pulp
Cut a 5-6 inch (13-15 cm) hole in the back or bottom (or an angled lid), pull out the stringy pulp and seeds into the bowl, then scrape the face side until a pushpin shows about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of wall.
    ⏱ 20分
  3. 03
    Transfer the design
Tape the paper on, poke holes along every line about 1/8 inch (3 mm) apart, peel it off, and rub a pinch of flour over the dots so the outline shows. If you drew straight on the pumpkin, just retrace any smudged lines.
    ⏱ 10分
  4. 04
    Saw out the face
Saw the smallest center pieces first and the biggest shapes last, holding the saw straight in, and push each piece out from the inside.
    ⏱ 30分
  5. 05
Seal the edges and light it
Wipe off marker, flour and pulp, rub petroleum jelly on all cut edges, set an LED tea light inside, and look at it in a dark room to spot any lines that need widening.
