Hosting a Halloween Party at Home

by MASTER
A costume party at home gives kids and adults a safe, low-cost way to celebrate Halloween together. Do the shopping and ordering in the two weeks before so the day itself is about setup and hosting, not running to the store.

Hosting a Halloween Party at Home

Plan backward from the doorbell

Put a start and end time on the invitation, for example 5:00 to 7:30 pm on the Saturday before Halloween. If you host on the 31st itself in the US or Canada, finish by 6:00 pm or build trick-or-treating into the plan. Two and a half hours is plenty, because younger kids melt down after that. Work backward from the start time: decorations finished 1 hour before, food out 15 minutes before, and you in your own costume 10 minutes before. First-timers decorate last and end up hanging cobwebs while guests ring the bell. Do the room first while you still have energy.

  • Shop the dry goods (candy, plates, cups, prizes, decor) the weekend before. Buy pumpkins 3-5 days out and carve them no earlier than 2 days ahead, because carved pumpkins go soft and moldy fast.
  • Use LED tea lights in jack-o'-lanterns and near the entry. Capes and flowing costumes near real flames are the most common party hazard.
  • Stretch fake cobweb until it's see-through. A golf-ball-sized wad covers about 3 ft (1 m) of railing or window. Clumps look like lint.

Feed people without living in the kitchen

The shortcut experienced hosts use is store-bought base, homemade finish. Order pizza, or buy frozen meatballs and a veggie tray, then spend your time on 2 themed items people will photograph. Think plain cupcakes topped with candy eyes, or a clementine 'pumpkin' platter with celery-stick stems.

  • Pizza math: 2 slices per kid and 3 per adult. 12 kids and 8 adults need 48 slices, which is 6 large 14-inch (35 cm) pizzas at 8 slices each.
  • Book delivery the day before for a fixed time 30-45 minutes after the start. Halloween evening is one of the busiest pizza nights of the year, and same-day orders often arrive an hour late.
  • Ask about allergies on the invitation, keep nut candy off the main table, and label anything containing nuts. For kids under 4, skip whole grapes, popcorn and hard candy because they are choking risks.
  • Put drinks on a separate table from the food so the crowd splits in two.

Run games in short, loud bursts

Plan 3 games of 10-15 minutes each, with free play in between.

  • Start with a costume parade right after everyone arrives, so photos happen while costumes are still intact.
  • Then run mummy wrap: teams of 3, one roll of toilet paper per team, 2-minute timer.
  • Finish with pumpkin bowling or donuts on a string.

Give every kid a prize at the end instead of prizes for winners only; it saves tears. Have a helper adult run the games while you handle the door and the food.

How to tell it's going right

  • Food is out when the first guest arrives, and you never spend more than 10 minutes at a stretch in the kitchen.
  • Every 20-minute block has a plan: arrival, parade, food, games, goody bags.
  • Stairs and walkways are clear of cords, cobweb and props, and masks come off at the food table.
  • Check the leftovers afterward. If more than 2 pizzas remain, plan 1.5 slices per kid next year.
⏱ 5時間5分★ 普通
現在
Your living room and kitchen look like any other evening, and about 12 kids plus their parents are due at 5:00 pm in costume.
難関
The host orders pizza at 4:30 pm on Halloween and it arrives an hour late. They spend the first hour still hanging decorations and calming hungry kids instead of running the costume parade.
希望
The room is decorated and the food is out before the doorbell rings, the kids rotate through three games, and the house is back in order within 30 minutes after the last guest leaves.
対応指針
  • When a child keeps tripping or bumping into things because a mask or long costume blocks their view
    →
Take the mask off or pin up the hem, and offer a quick face-paint mark so they still feel in costume.
  • When a younger child gets scared of a decoration or a spooky sound
    →
Turn the lights up in that room, switch off the sound effect, and move them to the craft or food table with a parent.
  • When kids start running wild or drifting during free play
    →
Start the next game early with the timer instead of waiting for the planned slot.
