Choosing and Setting Up a Real Christmas Tree
内容のプレビュー
Measure before you fall in love
The classic first-timer mistake is buying a tree that looks small outdoors and then scrapes the ceiling. Take your ceiling height, subtract the stand height (usually 4-8 in / 10-20 cm) and the topper, then leave another 6 in (15 cm) of headroom. In an 8 ft (2.4 m) room that usually means a tree of about 6.5 ft (2 m), or 7 ft (2.1 m) only if your topper is small. Lot height tags are often generous, so measure the tree yourself. Also measure the floor width you can spare, since a 7 ft Fraser fir is often 4-5 ft (1.2-1.5 m) across at the bottom. Finally, check your stand's trunk opening, which is often 4-6 in (10-15 cm). Save all three numbers on your phone.
Pick for freshness, not just shape
- Pull test: run a loosely closed hand down an outer branch toward you. A fresh tree loses only a few needles.
- Bounce test: lift the tree a few inches and drop it on its trunk. Some brown inner needles falling is normal. A shower of green ones means it's drying out.
- Bend test: fir needles should snap cleanly, and pine needles should bend without breaking. Brittle needles or a dull, grayish color are bad signs.
For needle hold, choose Fraser, Noble or Nordmann fir. Balsam and Douglas fir smell strongest. Norway spruce is cheap but sheds fast in a heated room. In Australia, Radiata pine is the usual choice, and it drinks a lot in December heat. The shortcut experienced buyers use is asking the lot to net the tree and make a fresh cut. If the tree will be standing in water at home within 4-6 hours, that cut may be all you need.
Why the cut-and-water timing matters
Within roughly 4-6 hours of a cut, sap seals the trunk end and the tree stops drinking. So the order is fixed: cut, then straight into a full stand. Cut 1/2-1 in (1-2.5 cm) straight across. Don't angle it, don't drill holes, and don't shave the bark to fit the stand, because the outer layers carry most of the water. A stand should hold about 1 quart of water per inch of trunk diameter (about 1 L per 2.5 cm). Plain tap water works fine. Sugar, aspirin or bleach additives don't help.
How to tell it's working
A drinking tree empties a good share of its stand on day one, and a 6-7 ft tree can take up to 1 gallon (4 L) in the first 24 hours. If the water level barely moves on day one, the cut has probably sealed. Check the level every morning for the first week, and never let it drop below the trunk base. Keep the tree at least 3 ft (1 m) from radiators, heating vents, fireplaces and sunny windows. Let the branches drop overnight before decorating. Use LED lights to reduce heat on the needles, skip any string with frayed wires or cracked sockets, and switch the lights off at bedtime or when you go out.
- When the trunk is too wide to fit your stand's opening→Don't whittle the bark around the base; swap to a larger stand, or ask the lot to fit one before you leave.
- When the water level has dropped below the trunk base for more than a few hours→If you can safely get the tree out, make a fresh 1/2 in (1 cm) cut and refill right away; otherwise top up immediately and watch whether it starts drinking again within a day.
- When the tree leans after you tighten the stand→Have your helper hold the trunk vertical while you loosen all the screws, then retighten opposite pairs a little at a time while the helper checks the tree from two sides.

- 01Measure your room and standPick a spot at least 3 ft (1 m) from heat sources, then record the ceiling height minus stand, topper and 6 in (15 cm), the floor width available, and the stand's trunk opening on your phone.⏱ 10分
- 02Test and choose a tree at the lotCheck height and width against your numbers with the tape measure, do the pull, bounce and bend tests on two or three candidates, then ask the lot for a fresh cut and netting.⏱ 30分
- 03Load and secure the tree for the driveLay it on a blanket with the trunk facing forward, strap it down at two points, and tug the tree to make sure it doesn't shift before you drive off.⏱ 10分
- 04Trim the base at homeIf more than 4-6 hours have passed since the lot's cut, saw 1/2-1 in (1-2.5 cm) straight across, and in any case remove the branches from the bottom 6-8 in (15-20 cm) so the trunk sits deep in the stand.⏱ 10分
- 05Set it in the stand and fill with waterWhile your helper holds it vertical, tighten opposite screws in pairs, fill the stand to the top so the cut end sits below the waterline, then cut away the netting so the branches can settle.⏱ 15分
