Holiday Gift List and Budget Before Black Friday
内容のプレビュー
Set the total first, then split it
Pick the total before you think about any gift, so it reflects money you actually have, not what the gifts happen to cost. Open last year's November and December card and bank statements and add up gift-related charges. That number is usually higher than people guess and is your reality check. Then set this year's total from cash available by mid-December, not from credit you'll pay off in spring.
Give the predictable extras their own lines with their own caps, just like family: teacher and coach gifts, the office Secret Santa, host gifts for each party you're invited to, and stocking stuffers. Then hold back a buffer of 10–15% for the costs you can't name yet: wrapping paper, tape and gift bags, shipping, batteries, and the person you'll remember on December 18th. Your caps plus the buffer must equal the total exactly. If they don't, cut caps now, not at checkout.
Know the real price before the sale
A "40% off" banner means nothing unless you know what the item cost in October. For every gift idea, write today's price. For the pricier ones, check the price history with a price-tracking extension or app. Then write a buy-below price: the number at which you'll buy without thinking. Big-brand toys, electronics, small kitchen appliances and gaming gear usually do drop over Black Friday. Handmade items, books from small sellers, experiences and personalized gifts rarely do, so buy those whenever it suits you. Personalized items often need extra production time, so order them early anyway.
Spend your research time on the 3–5 most expensive gifts. For anything under about $25 (£20 / C$35 / A$40), a quick price check is plenty. The savings aren't worth 20 minutes of comparison.
Keep the list where you'll shop
Use one spreadsheet or notes table on your phone, because that's where you'll be shopping at 6 a.m. on Friday. Use these columns: Name | Cap | Gift idea | Backup idea | Buy-below | Where | Paid | Status. Every time you buy, fill in Paid right away and keep a running total at the top. If you share gift-buying with a partner or co-parent, share the sheet so nobody buys the same LEGO set twice. Also note each store's holiday return window, since many extend returns into January for November purchases.
How to tell it's ready
- ☐ Every recipient, including teachers, hosts and the office exchange, has a cap, a first idea and a backup idea
- ☐ The caps plus the buffer add up to your total, to the dollar
- ☐ Every gift has today's price, and your top 3–5 have a buy-below price based on price history
- ☐ Shipping cutoff dates for anyone you're mailing to are written down, with earlier dates for anyone overseas
- When a deal pops up on something that isn't on your list→Buy it only if it replaces a listed gift and fits under that person's cap, and cross the old idea off; otherwise close the tab.
- When a must-have gift never drops below your buy-below price or sells out by Cyber Monday night→Buy it at regular price if it still fits the cap, or switch to the backup idea that same night instead of waiting for a restock.
- When one person's gift goes over their cap→Take the difference from the buffer and write down how much buffer is left, rather than quietly shaving other people's caps.
