What's inside
Organize and restock the holds pickup shelf when the queue builds up or before opening to make items easy to find. Use this routine when items are scattered, misgrouped, or labels are missing.
The holds pickup shelf currently has mixed items across sections, several missing or incorrect labels, and some holds stacked behind others so patrons and staff have trouble locating items.
Items from different pickup dates and branches are intermixed and some bins lack clear labels, causing frequent double-stacking and making it hard to return items to the right place.
All hold items are grouped by pickup date and branch, placed with spine/barcode visible in their correct bins, labels are present or replaced, and the shelf is cleared for patrons to retrieve holds.
- 01 Clear workspaceRemove unrelated items from the shelf and place them on a cart or temporary bin; create an empty section to sort into and note existing bin labels that need replacement.⏱ 5 min
- 02 Sort items by pickup date and branchCheck each hold slip or barcode, separate items into groups labeled 'Today', 'Next 3 days', and 'Older', and separate any branch-specific holds into their designated stacks.⏱ 10 min
- 03 Relabel bins and restockReplace or attach clear temporary paper labels to each bin indicating pickup date and branch, then place items into the correct bins with spines/barcodes facing out and avoid double-stacking by keeping a single forward row.⏱ 10 min
- 04 Final verification and cleanupWalk the shelf to confirm every item is in the correct bin, update a short shelf log or note counts for problem items (missing slips, wrong branch), return the cart and clear the workspace.⏱ 5 min
