Circulation Desk and Self-Check Kiosk Sanitization

Sanitize high-touch surfaces at the circulation desk and self-check kiosks after shifts and during busy periods to lower the risk of germ transfer and keep devices functioning.

⏱ 30 min ★ Easy
Target

High-touch surfaces at the circulation desk and kiosks have fingerprints, visible soil, or unknown contamination and lack a recent cleaning log entry.

Obstacle

Continuous patron use and staff interruptions make it hard to find an uninterrupted window to clean; some electronics are sensitive to liquids, so staff must use compatible disinfectants and follow contact-time instructions.

Expectation

Surfaces will be visibly clean, free of fingerprints and soil, touch-responsive devices will remain functional, and the cleaning log will show the time and staff initials.

Materials
  • • EPA-registered disinfectant wipes — 1 container
  • • Disposable nitrile gloves — 2 pair
  • • Paper towels — 5 sheet
Steps
  1. 01
    Prepare supplies and PPE
Put on a pair of nitrile gloves, take one container of disinfectant wipes and five paper towel sheets, and check the cleaning log for the last cleaning time.
    ⏱ 3 min
  2. 02
    Clear movable items from surfaces
Remove loose items (books, patron bags, loose papers, pens) from the counter and kiosk surfaces and place them on a clean tray or shelf at least 30 cm away so all high-touch areas are exposed.
    ⏱ 4 min
  3. 03
    Sanitize all high-touch points
Wipe surfaces in this order with overlapping strokes: circulation counter edge, card readers and PIN pads (front and slots), self-check touchscreen face and edges, barcode scanner housing, keyboard and mouse, and pen/stylus; change wipes when visibly soiled or dry and follow the product contact time.
    ⏱ 16 min
  4. 04
Air dry, replace items, and log
Allow disinfected surfaces to air dry for the labeled contact time, return items to their original locations, dispose of used wipes and gloves, and record the cleaning time, your initials, and any issues in the cleaning log.
