Watercolor postcard

Create a small watercolor painting on a postcard-sized sheet and mail it to send a personal greeting; use when you want a quick handmade note. This routine focuses on a compact composition and efficient preparation so the card is ready to post the same day.

⏱ 1h★ Medium
Target

A blank postcard-sized watercolor sheet sits unpainted on my desk with no message written and no postage.

Obstacle

I struggle to choose a simple composition that fits the postcard proportions and often smudge paint because I rush while it is still damp. I also underestimate drying time and forget to reserve space for the message and address.

Expectation

A finished watercolor image covers the postcard front, a short message and recipient address are written on the back, and a postage stamp is affixed ready for mailing.

Materials
  • • postcard-sized watercolor paper — 1 sheet
  • • postage stamp — 1 stamp
Tools
  • • round watercolor brush (size 6) — 1
  • • compact watercolor pan set — 1
  • • HB pencil — 1
  • • kneaded eraser — 1
  • • small water jar and paper towel — 1
Steps
  1. 01
    Prepare workspace
Tape the postcard to a flat board or table, set out paint set, brush, water jar, and paper towel, and choose a simple subject or reference that fits a 4x6 composition.
    ⏱ 5 min
  2. 02
    Light pencil sketch
Draw a light, small-scale composition on the postcard in pencil, reserving a clear area on the back for the message and address; erase any heavy lines.
    ⏱ 10 min
  3. 03
    Block in base washes
Apply initial washes to establish large color shapes and values, working from light to dark and leaving highlights, using clean water to avoid overworking the paper.
    ⏱ 20 min
  4. 04
    Add details and final touches
Layer darker accents and edges for definition, lift stray marks with a damp brush if needed, and allow the card to dry completely before handling.
    ⏱ 15 min
  5. 05
    Write message, address, and mail
Write a short message (1-3 sentences) on the back, add the recipient address, affix the stamp in the top-right corner, then place the postcard in a nearby mailbox or drop it at the post office.
