Board Game Evening Setup

Prepare the living room and game components before friends arrive so the evening starts relaxed and on schedule. Use this routine when hosting a casual game night at home.

⏱ 30 min★ Easy
Target

Living room is cluttered, snacks aren't ready, seating and table space aren't arranged, and candidate games are still in boxes.

Obstacle

Limited table space and mixed player preferences make choosing games and arranging player areas tricky. Snacks must be set to avoid spills and accommodate dietary needs without taking up the main play surface.

Expectation

The table and seating are cleared and arranged for the group, snacks and drinks are accessible away from game components, and 1–3 selected games are opened with components organized and quick rule notes ready.

Materials
  • • Assorted snacks — 3 bag(s)
  • • Disposable napkins — 1 pack
  • • Bottled water or drinks — 2 liter
Tools
  • • Large table — 1
  • • Chairs — 6
  • • Small bowls or containers — 6
  • • Notecards and pen — 1 set
Steps
  1. 01
    Clear and clean play surface
Remove unrelated items from the table and surrounding area, place them in a designated bin, and wipe the tabletop with a cloth until visibly clean.
    ⏱ 5 min
  2. 02
    Arrange seating and player zones
Set chairs for each expected player with approximately one arm's-reach space; place a coaster and a small container or tray at each seat for personal components and drinks.
    ⏱ 5 min
  3. 03
    Select and ready games
Confirm player count and quick preferences, choose 1–3 games that fit the group and time, open the boxes, return stray components to their game trays, and place rulebooks together.
    ⏱ 5 min
  4. 04
    Set up snacks and drinks
Place snacks in small bowls on a side table labeled for common allergens, provide napkins and a pitcher or bottles of water with glasses, and keep snacks off the main play surface to prevent spills.
    ⏱ 7 min
  5. 05
Final check and quick rule notes
Shuffle decks, count and sort tokens into small containers, check each selected game's component list, and write two-sentence rule reminders for each game on notecards to read before play.
