Borrow a book by a new-to-you author

Find and borrow a book by an author you haven't read before so you can expand your reading without buying a copy. Use this routine when you have 30–45 minutes and want a quick, deliberate selection process.

⏱ 40 min★ Easy
Target

I do not currently have a borrowed book by an author I haven't read and I haven't chosen a candidate to borrow.

Obstacle

Catalogs and recommendation lists contain many unfamiliar names, making it hard to identify an author I truly haven't read, and I need to confirm whether my library has a copy or a hold option.

Expectation

I will have a borrowed copy (physical or digital) checked out or a hold placed with the loan date noted and a return reminder set.

Steps
  1. 01
    Choose scope and priority
Decide genre, maximum length (pages or hours), preferred format (physical/ebook/audiobook), and whether you want a debut author or any new-to-you author; write the choices in one clear sentence.
    ⏱ 10 min
  2. 02
    Find candidate authors
Use the library subject browse, 'similar authors' tool, a trusted reading list, or a recommendation site to list 3–5 authors you have not read, and check each name against your read list or memory to confirm it's new-to-you.
    ⏱ 12 min
  3. 03
    Confirm availability and borrow/place hold
Search the library catalog or app for each candidate, note available formats and copies, then borrow an available copy or place a hold on the earliest acceptable format and record the expected pickup/loan date.
    ⏱ 8 min
  4. 04
    Record loan and sample pages
Add the loan due date to your calendar with a reminder three days before due, then read the first 10 pages or first 10% of the book to confirm you want to continue.
