A short routine to host a device-free, prompt-driven dinner conversation to increase attention and connection; use when family or friends gather for a shared meal.
Dinner is starting but people are checking phones, side conversations dominate, and there's limited eye contact or sustained topics.
Guests resist putting phones away out of habit or fear of missing notifications, and conversations fragment when one person monopolizes the talk or others wait for permission to speak.
Phones are set aside and the group conducts several timed, prompt-led turns so each person speaks for 1–2 minutes and most people respond at least once.
- • Phone drop bowl — 1
- • Timer — 1
- 01Set the ground rulesAnnounce the 'phones in the bowl' rule, place the bowl visibly on the table, and ask everyone to put devices inside; confirm verbal agreement from the group.⏱ 5 min
- 02Explain format and promptsDescribe the conversational plan: 2–3 prompts, one person speaks per turn for 1–2 minutes, no interruptions; show or read the first prompt aloud.⏱ 5 min
- 03Run timed speaking roundsFor each prompt, read it, start the timer, invite each person to speak in turn for 60–120 seconds, and gently enforce the timer while inviting quieter people to contribute.⏱ 15 min
- 04Close and return devicesUse a final 3–5 minute reflection prompt, ask each person to share one takeaway, thank everyone, then return phones from the bowl.⏱ 5 min
