Paper collage assembly
Make a small paper-scrap collage to upcycle leftover paper and create a decorative piece when you have about 30 minutes free.
⏱ 30 min★ Medium
Target
A messy pile of cut and torn paper scraps sits beside a blank cardstock sheet with no arrangement chosen.
Obstacle
It's hard to choose which scraps to use and lock in a composition without the layout feeling cluttered or leaving large empty gaps.
Expectation
The cardstock has a glued collage with layered scraps covering at least 60% of the sheet and a clear focal cluster of 3–5 contrasting pieces.
Materials
- • Scrap paper — 30 pieces
- • Glue stick — 1 stick
- • Cardstock — 1 sheet
Tools
- • Scissors — 1
- • Pencil — 1
- • Ruler — 1
Steps
- 01Select and trim scrapsSort through the paper pile and cut or tear pieces to 2–6 inch sizes, choosing about 12–20 candidate pieces and setting aside ones that are too similar.⏱ 5 min
- 02Establish palette and focal pointLay out candidate pieces on the cardstock without glue to form a central focal cluster of 3–5 contrasting pieces and pick 8–12 complementary pieces for background layers.⏱ 5 min
- 03Arrange layers and balanceMove pieces around to create visual balance, ensuring at least 60% coverage and no large empty areas; finalize positions by pressing pieces flat to test fit.⏱ 7 min
- 04Adhere piecesWorking from background to foreground, lift each piece, apply glue to the back with the glue stick, then press onto the cardstock and smooth out bubbles.⏱ 5 min
- 05Trim edges and finishTrim overhangs, reinforce edges if needed, add one small accent if space allows, and let the piece sit flat for 5–10 minutes to set.⏱ 8 min
