The telescope or binoculars are in storage, I have no tonight's target list, and there are no observation notes or photos saved for this evening.
Bright streetlights or porch lights near the viewing spot are washing out faint stars and making target acquisition slow; I also often start without a short prioritized target list and spend time scanning instead of recording.
Gear is set up at the viewing spot, three planned targets are observed and each has a one-line log, a quick sketch or photo, and a timestamped entry in the notebook or app.

- 01Prepare gear and choose spotBring the telescope/binoculars, chair, red light, and notebook to the chosen viewing spot; confirm batteries are installed and open the star-map app to tonight's location and mark three target objects.⏱ 5 min
- 02Set up and align opticsMount the scope or steady the binoculars, level the tripod, point at a bright reference star using the app, focus until star looks sharp, and center it in the eyepiece.⏱ 5 min
- 03Observe and record three targetsFor each of three planned targets spend about 5 minutes: center the object, note time, estimate magnitude and color, make a quick sketch or take a timestamped photo, and add one-line seeing/conditions notes in the notebook or app.⏱ 15 min
- 04Pack up and back up notesReturn equipment to storage, switch on normal lights, transfer photos to the app or cloud if needed, and write a short summary line in the notebook with total session time and any calibration notes.⏱ 5 min
