What's inside
A short, sensory-focused dishwashing routine to run after meals when the sink has accumulated dirty dishes. Use calm, measured steps to clear the sink and leave the kitchen ready for the next meal.
A sink with multiple dirty plates, bowls, cups, utensils, and pans with food residue and some standing water.
I rush through washing, skip pre-rinsing, or avoid greasy pans, which leaves residue and a cluttered sink; I also get distracted by my phone or other tasks during washing.
All dishes are rinsed and washed, placed on a drying towel or rack, and the sink and surrounding area are wiped and free of food residue and standing water.
- • Dish soap — 1 bottle
- • Sponge — 1
- • Drying towel or dish rack — 1
- 01Sort and clearScrape food into the compost or trash, stack similar items together (glasses, utensils, plates, pans) and set aside any knives or fragile items to be washed separately.⏱ 3 min
- 02Prepare sink and toolsRun warm water until the basin is about 2–3 inches deep, add a small squirt of dish soap (~1 teaspoon), wet the sponge, and place the drying towel or rack within reach.⏱ 5 min
- 03Wash items by orderWash in sequence from least to most greasy: glasses → utensils → plates → bowls → pans; scrub each item for about 15 seconds, rinse under running water, and place on the drying towel or rack.⏱ 10 min
- 04Soak and scrub stubborn itemsFill heavily soiled pans or baking dishes with hot soapy water to soak for 5–7 minutes while you wash other items, then scrub stuck-on residue with the abrasive side of the sponge for up to 60 seconds per item and rinse.⏱ 7 min
- 05Rinse, dry, and resetDo a final rinse of all items, wring out the sponge, wipe the sink basin and faucet to remove residue, drain the water, return the sponge and soap to their places, and hang the towel to dry.⏱ 5 min
