Dry citrus slices for decor

Create thin, dried citrus slices to use as simple natural ornaments, garlands, or candle toppers; use when you want low-cost, long-lasting accents from fresh fruit. This routine uses a low oven temperature and flipping to keep slices evenly colored and dry.

⏱ 2h 25m★ Easy
Target

Freshly sliced citrus pieces are moist and soft, clumping together and unsuitable for threading or gluing into decorations.

Obstacle

Slices tend to brown unevenly or remain tacky in the center when thickness varies or oven temperature is too high; without specific slice thickness, rack placement, and timing you risk overbrowning or underdrying.

Expectation

Citrus slices are uniformly dry, slightly translucent, firm to the touch, and cool so they can be strung, glued, or stored without sticking or molding.

Materials
  • • Citrus fruits — 3-6 pieces
  • • Parchment paper — 1 sheet
Tools
  • • Oven — 1
  • • Baking sheet — 1
  • • Wire cooling rack — 1
  • • Sharp knife or mandoline — 1
Steps
  1. 01
    Slice the citrus evenly
Cut fruit into 3–5 mm (about 1/8–1/4 inch) slices so all pieces dry at the same rate; discard ends and remove seeds that will darken.
    ⏱ 10 min
  2. 02
Prepare baking setup and blot slices
Line a baking sheet with parchment, place a wire rack on top, arrange slices in a single layer without touching, and blot excess surface moisture with paper towel.
    ⏱ 5 min
  3. 03
Dry first pass at low temperature
Preheat oven to its lowest setting (around 170°F / 75–80°C), place tray in middle, and bake for about 60 minutes until edges appear dryer but centers still slightly soft.
    ⏱ 1h
  4. 04
    Flip and continue drying
Flip each slice, rotate the tray for even heat, and bake another 40 minutes or until centers are firm and slices look translucent without dark spots.
    ⏱ 40 min
  5. 05
    Cool, condition, and store
Remove slices to a cool rack, let them sit 30 minutes to ensure no tackiness, then store flat in a single layer or gently stack with paper between slices.
