What's inside

Hand-bound signature notebook

Bind a small notebook from folded sheets and a paper cover; use when you want a durable pocket notebook made by hand.

⏱ 30 min★ Medium
Target

A stack of loose cut paper sheets and a separate cover with no folds, holes, or thread.

Obstacle

I struggle to mark and punch evenly spaced sewing holes and keep the folded signatures aligned while sewing, which leads to uneven gathers or skipped holes.

Expectation

A single stitched notebook with nested folded signatures, evenly spaced sewing stations, a neat spine, and the cover attached so pages open flat.

Materials
  • • Text-weight paper — 12 sheet
  • • Cover paper — 1 sheet
  • • Waxed linen thread — 2 meter
  • • PVA glue — 10 ml
Tools
  • • Bone folder — 1
  • • Awl — 1
  • • Tapestry needle — 1
  • • Metal ruler — 1
  • • Cutting mat and craft knife — 1
  • • Binder clips — 4
Steps
  1. 01
    Cut and measure materials
Trim 12 sheets of interior paper and the cover to the desired final size, measure and mark the spine center, and stack the sheets so edges align.
    ⏱ 10 min
  2. 02
    Fold and assemble signatures
Fold each sheet in half with the bone folder, nest folded sheets into two signatures of six sheets each, and compress each signature with two binder clips to keep edges aligned.
    ⏱ 6 min
  3. 03
    Mark and punch sewing stations
Measure and mark 4 evenly spaced sewing stations along each signature fold (for example at 1.5 cm, 4.5 cm, 7.5 cm, 10.5 cm from the head), align signatures, and pierce through all layers at each mark with the awl.
    ⏱ 5 min
  4. 04
    Sew signatures and finish spine
Thread the tapestry needle with waxed linen and sew through the pierced stations using a simple kettle/saddle stitch, pull stitches snug to remove slack, tie and trim thread ends, apply a small bead of PVA to secure the knots, press the book under weight until tack-free, then attach the cover with PVA and burnish the spine.
