Steps

    Gather ingredients and tools
    Collect two bread slices, chosen spread, cheese slice, tomato, lettuce, plate, knife, and toaster or skillet and place them on the counter within reach.

    Prepare and toast bread
    Toast the bread to medium-brown (about 2–3 minutes in a toaster or 3–4 minutes per side in a skillet) and place one slice on the plate when done.

    Apply spread and layer toppings
    Use the knife to spread about 1 tablespoon of your chosen spread in an even layer on the toasted slice, then place the cheese, lettuce, and two tomato slices in a single overlapping layer; season tomato with a pinch of salt and pepper.

    Finish, inspect, and tidy
    Optional: briefly melt the cheese under a broiler or in the skillet for 30–60 seconds if desired, then transfer to center of plate, wipe crumbs into trash or napkin, and return unused ingredients to their storage.
