Target

Blank page in my sketchbook and a busy street corner with shifting light, moving people, and layered architecture I want to record.

Obstacle

Complex perspective, moving figures, and limited time make it hard to choose a composition and establish a clear value structure before details overwhelm the drawing.

Expectation

One completed 30-minute sketch on a single page that shows clear perspective, readable major shapes, and simple tonal or color washes to convey light.

Steps
  1. 01
    Choose viewpoint and set up
    Pick a spot that contains a clear focal building or street corner, set up sketchbook and tools, and take one reference photo for proportions if needed.

  2. 02
    Make 3 thumbnails
    Draw three 1:3–1:6 page thumbnails exploring different crops and focal placements; circle the strongest thumbnail and note the horizon and vanishing point.

    Block in pencil proportions
    Lightly map major planes, horizon line, and perspective lines in pencil and mark the largest shapes (buildings, sidewalk, tree masses, sky) to occupy correct page areas.

    Ink main lines and gestures
    Ink primary architectural edges, dominant verticals/horizontals, and fast gesture lines for people and vehicles; avoid rendering every small detail.

  5. 05
    Add washes or tones and final accents
    Apply 1–3 quick washes or marker tones to establish values, lift highlights if needed, and add two or three ink or white-pen accents to finish the page.
