What's inside

Friendly Library Note

Leave a brief anonymous note for the next reader when you return a book or browse the stacks. Do this quietly and without altering the book.

⏱ 10 min★ Very easy
Target

No friendly note is currently tucked inside a library book for the next reader.

Obstacle

Unsure what to write without including personal contact details and unsure where in the book to place the note so it won't be lost or damage pages; also unsure of the library's policy on leaving items inside books.

Expectation

A small anonymous note is folded and tucked between pages of a circulating book, placed where it won't stress the spine and is likely to be seen by the next reader.

Materials
  • • Small slip of paper — 1 sheet
Tools
  • • Pen — 1
Steps
  1. 01
    Write a short anonymous note
Write 1–2 sentences offering a positive thought or book-friendly comment, explicitly omitting any names, phone numbers, emails, or social media handles.
    ⏱ 3 min
  2. 02
    Fold the note compactly
Fold the paper into a small rectangle (about 2x3 inches) so it slides between pages without creating a bulge or stressing the spine.
    ⏱ 1 min
  3. 03
Select an appropriate book and page
Choose a circulating, non-fragile book and pick a page near a table of contents, a short quote, or the start of a chapter where the note is likely to be noticed and not damage the book.
    ⏱ 2 min
  4. 04
    Tuck the note between pages
Slide the folded note gently between the chosen pages about one inch from the outer edge so it stays put when the book is closed.
    ⏱ 2 min
  5. 05
Return the book according to library policy
Either reshelve the book in its proper place or place it on the return desk, following library rules so staff can process it without issue.
