Obstacle

Choosing which simple motifs to stitch and keeping consistent stitch length and tension slows progress; preparing thread (separating strands and threading the needle) also breaks flow.

A small hoop displays a centered sampler with three basic stitches completed (running stitch, satin stitch, French knots), thread ends secured and excess fabric trimmed.

• Fabric — 1 piece
• Water-soluble fabric pen — 1 pen

Steps

Prepare hoop and fabric
Loosen hoop, center fabric over inner hoop, tighten outer hoop until fabric is smooth and taut, then trim excess fabric to about 1 inch around the hoop.

Transfer simple design
Use the water-soluble pen to draw three small motifs (each ~1–2 cm) in a row at the hoop center labeled for running stitch, satin stitch, and French knots.

Prepare threads and needle
Cut 18-inch lengths of floss for each color, separate into two strands, thread the needle and tie a small knot or leave a short tail secured under stitches.

Stitch the sampler
Complete the three motifs: do a 10-stitch running stitch row, fill a 1–2 cm shape with satin stitches, and make 6–8 evenly spaced French knots; secure thread ends with small backstitches and trim.
