Getting Your Home Ready for Overnight Holiday Guests

by MASTER
When family is staying over for Thanksgiving or Christmas, a few hours of prep about five weeks out means every guest has a bed, towels and a working bathroom. You avoid a late-night scramble for sheets or an air pump.

Getting Your Home Ready for Overnight Holiday Guests

Start with beds, because everything else follows from them

Your headcount and where each person sleeps decide how many sheet sets, pillows, towels and toilet rolls you need. Map beds first and the shopping list nearly writes itself. The checklist assumes 4 guests staying 3 nights in 3 sleeping spots; rescale it with the per-guest and per-bed amounts below. Match sleeping spots to people:

  • Guest room or kid's room: best for older relatives or anyone who needs a door that closes. Low air mattresses are hard to get up from, so give older guests a real bed.
  • Sofa bed or futon: good for one or two adults. If the mattress is thin or you can feel the bar, a 2–3 in (5–8 cm) foam topper ($30–$60) fixes most complaints.
  • Air mattress: a queen runs about $40–$100, and raised models cost more. Borrowing one is free, but test it, since borrowed ones leak more often and the pump tends to go missing.
  • Sleeping bags or floor pads: fine for kids and teens.

If you're more than two beds short, it's often easier to book a nearby hotel or rental for one household than to squeeze everyone in. That's a fair choice, not a failure.

Test now, wash later, shop in between

The classic first-timer mistake is finding the leaky air mattress, missing pump or wrong-size sheet the night guests arrive. Do the overnight inflation test and the sheet fit check in this session, while there's still time to replace things.

A brand-new air mattress stretches on its first night and feels softer by morning even without a leak, and a cold room makes the air inside contract. Top it up and test a second night before you decide it leaks. Lay a blanket between the air mattress and the sheet, because the air inside pulls body heat away. Deep air mattresses often need deep-pocket sheets (14–18 in / 36–46 cm).

Washing everything now is wasted effort, because linens get dusty in a closet. Count them now and wash them the week before. Order gaps (pillows, towels, a spare pump) right away, since holiday shipping slows down in November and December.

Amounts to plan by

  • Per guest: 2 pillows, 1 bath towel, 1 hand towel and 1 washcloth. For stays over 3 nights, add 1 extra bath towel per person or plan one load of laundry.
  • Per bed: 1 sheet set and 1 extra blanket, plus 1 spare sheet set for the whole house for spills or a kid's accident. In a Southern Hemisphere Christmas, a fan replaces the blanket.
  • Toilet paper: about 1 roll per guest per 2 days, on top of your household's usual stock, plus 4 spare rolls.
  • Hot water: a typical 40–50 gal (150–190 L) tank covers about 3–4 back-to-back showers, then needs 30–60 minutes to recover. With 6+ people, split showers between evening and morning and ask for about 10 minutes each.

How to tell you're ready

You're ready when four things are true:

  • You can point to a made-up sleeping spot for every name on your list.
  • The air mattress held its firmness for 8+ hours on its second night.
  • The smoke alarm nearest each sleeping spot beeps when tested.
  • Each guest has a note with the Wi-Fi password and the house basics.

If any one of these is missing, that's your to-do for the final week.

⏱ 2h 20m★ Easy
Target
Relatives are arriving in about five weeks, and I haven't worked out where everyone sleeps or whether we have enough sheets, towels and bathroom supplies for them.
Obstacle
The air mattress goes flat overnight, or the pump turns out to be missing, and it's only discovered the evening guests arrive. Or the sheets are too shallow for a 16-inch (41 cm) mattress and pop off at 2 a.m.
Expectation
Every guest has a confirmed sleeping spot with tested bedding, and the towels, toiletries and a short house-info note are set aside, so the week before only needs laundry and a final wipe-down.
Response Rules
  • When the headcount is more than your available beds by two or more
    →
Ask the household with the most independence, or with young kids who need routines, whether they'd prefer a nearby hotel or rental, and offer to help cover or book it.
  • When the air mattress is still noticeably softer after a second overnight test
    →
Mark it as unreliable and order a replacement or borrow another this week, rather than trying to patch it and hoping.
  • When you don't know about allergies or needs (pets, down pillows, stairs, CPAP outlet)
    →
Send one group text today asking about allergies, mobility and anything they need near the bed, and adjust the sleeping map from the answers.

Steps
  1. 01
    Map guests to sleeping spots

    ⏱ 20 min
  2. 02
Set up and test spare beds
Inflate the air mattress and open the sofa bed, put a sheet on each to check the fit, press the test button on the nearest smoke alarm, and leave the mattress inflated overnight to see whether it holds firm by morning.
    ⏱ 40 min
  3. 03
    Count linens and towels
Lay out sheets, pillows, blankets and towels per bed and per guest using the amounts in the tactics, then put each complete set in its own labeled pillowcase so it's grab-and-go.
    ⏱ 30 min
  4. 04
Stock the guest bathroom and order gaps
Check toilet paper, soap, toiletries, a plunger and a working night-light, then order everything missing in one go today, before holiday shipping slows.
    ⏱ 30 min
  5. 05
    Write the house-info note
Fit the Wi-Fi password, thermostat and shower tips, the meal and quiet-hours schedule, and any pet or door-lock rules on one page, then print a copy per room or text it to guests.
