A garment (shirt, jacket, or pants) has a small tear up to 3 inches or a loose/missing button and is lying on a flat, well-lit surface.

난관

Fraying fabric edges and a thin needle make it hard to form stable stitches without puckering, and matching thread color or holding the button in the correct position can be fiddly in a small area.

The tear is closed with secure, evenly spaced stitches and trimmed knots, or the button is sewn on tightly with a neat shank; the garment lies flat and is ready to wear.

Gather materials
Select matching thread, a replacement button if needed, two needles, scissors, and a pin; cut an 18–24 inch length of thread and tie a single knot at one end.

Prepare the garment
Lay the garment flat, align torn edges or position the button where it belongs, press the area flat if needed, and secure with a pin so the pieces stay aligned.

Sew the repair
If repairing a tear, make small running or whip stitches about 3–5 mm apart across the gap, then reverse two stitches and tie a secure knot; if attaching a button, make 6–8 passes through the holes in an X or parallel pattern, create a short thread shank if needed, and tie off with two knots.

Finish and inspect
Trim thread ends to 3–5 mm, press the repaired area, test button stability with five gentle tugs, and put the garment on or stretch the seam to confirm the repair lies flat and holds.
