Many trees share similar leaves or bark so I hesitate between species and often forget to record where I photographed a tree.

You will have labeled photos and short ID notes for at least five different trees along a planned route and a one-sentence distinguishing trait for each species.

    Choose a 30-minute loop and five target trees
    Select a safe 30-minute walking route around your block and pick five trees or five species to find and document along that route; note start location and approximate stops.

    Prepare tools and quick ID checklist
    Open your field guide app and notebook, create a list of the five targets, and write three quick ID features to check for each (leaf shape, bark texture, fruit/flower presence).

    Walk the route and observe specimens
    Walk the planned loop, stop at each candidate tree, inspect leaves, bark, and reproductive parts for up to 2 minutes per tree, and compare to your checklist to form a provisional ID.

    Photograph and record labeled notes
    Take at least two photos per tree (leaf close-up and trunk), save location, and write a one-sentence note with the provisional species name and the two most distinguishing features you used.

    Review and label files
    Back at home or on the phone, verify each provisional ID against the guide, correct names if needed, rename photo files or add tags, and consolidate the five species with one-line ID tips.
