Preserve a freshly picked wildflower for your nature journal by pressing it flat and adding a label; do this after a walk when you want to record a specimen quickly.
You have one or more freshly picked wildflowers that are unpressed, possibly damp, and not yet documented for your journal.
Fresh flowers hold moisture and layered petals can overlap, which leads to uneven drying, browning, or mold; lacking absorbent paper or firm, even pressure makes the flower crumple or discolor.
Each chosen flower will be arranged flat between absorbent sheets inside a book or press with a written label tucked in, ready to dry without folded petals or overlapping parts.
- • Blotting paper or coffee filters — 4 sheet
- • Acid-free labels — 4 label
- • Parchment or copy paper — 2 sheet
- • Heavy hardcover book — 1
- 01Select and trim the specimenChoose a fresh flower with intact petals, trim the stem to about 2–3 cm below the bloom, and gently brush off dirt or insects; blot visible surface moisture with a tissue.⏱ 5분
- 02Prepare pressing layersOn a clean surface place two sheets of blotting paper, add a cardboard backing if using a book, and top with a sheet of parchment or copy paper to catch any sap.⏱ 5분
- 03Arrange flower between papersLay the flower face-up on the blotting paper with petals spread so none overlap, space multiple specimens at least 2 cm apart, then cover with two more blotting sheets and a final parchment sheet.⏱ 10분
- 04Apply weight and label the specimenClose the book, add 2–3 heavy objects on top for even pressure, write species/date/location on an acid-free label, and slip the label inside the paper layers so the specimen is documented while it begins to dry.⏱ 10분
