Water-root a houseplant cutting

Set up a stem cutting in water to start roots for propagation; do this when you have a fresh cutting or plan to propagate a healthy houseplant.

⏱ 20분★ 쉬움
현재

A freshly cut or about-to-be-cut stem that has no roots and is not yet placed in water.

난관

It's easy to miss the node when cutting or to leave lower leaves that will rot in the water, and cuttings can tip or sit too shallowly so nodes don't stay submerged.

기대

The cutting sits upright in clear, room-temperature water with at least one node submerged, labeled with the date, and you're ready to observe root emergence.

단계
  1. 01
Choose and cut a healthy stem
Pick a non-flowering stem, sterilize scissors with rubbing alcohol, cut a 10–15 cm section with at least one visible node and make a clean cut 1 cm below the node.
    ⏱ 5분
  2. 02
Trim lower leaves and inspect node
Remove leaves from the bottom 3–4 cm so no foliage will sit in the water and check the node for bumps where roots will form.
    ⏱ 3분
  3. 03
    Prepare the jar and water
Rinse a clear jar with hot water, fill with 2 cups room-temperature water, and write the plant name and date on a label.
    ⏱ 3분
  4. 04
Place cutting, secure, and set monitoring
Put the cutting so the node is submerged, ensure the stem is upright (use a support or narrow-neck jar if needed), take a photo for reference, and set a reminder to change the water every 5–7 days.
