Fall Leaf Cleanup and Winterizing Your Yard

by MASTER
Fallen leaves left on the lawn mat down, smother grass, and invite snow mold, while unprotected beds and hoses take a beating in the first hard freeze. Do this main cleanup when most leaves are down but before your area's first hard frost (in Australia, that's usually April to May).

Fall Leaf Cleanup and Winterizing Your Yard

Turn leaves into mulch instead of bagging them all

Shredding leaves with the mower is the biggest time-saver. A mulching mower on dry leaves turns an ankle-deep layer into confetti that sinks into the grass and feeds the soil. You'll know it worked when you can see at least half of the grass blades through the shredded bits. If you can't, make a second pass with the bagger attached. It collects the extra shredded leaves, which become ready-made mulch for your beds. If you have no bagger, rake the surplus onto a tarp. Whole, unshredded leaves mat into a wet sheet, but shredded ones stay loose. That's why the lawn comes before the beds: mowing produces the bed mulch you'll need later. The times here assume a typical quarter-acre (about 1,000 m²) lot.

Timing beats effort

  • Work on a dry afternoon. Wet leaves clump, clog the mower deck, and weigh twice as much to rake.
  • Don't wait for the last leaf. A quick mow-over every week or two during peak fall keeps the layer thin. This session is the big one, but it's much easier if leaves are under about 2 in (5 cm) deep.
  • For cool-season lawns (most of the northern US, Canada and the UK), set the last mow of the season at 2.5–3 in (6–7.5 cm). Shorter stresses the grass, and taller flops over and mats under snow. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda, St. Augustine or buffalo stay at their usual height.

Where to spend time and where to save it

Spend your time on the lawn and on keeping mulch off plant crowns and tree trunks. Leave a 3 in (7.5 cm) gap around trunks and stems so they don't rot or hide rodents. Save time in the beds, because you don't need to cut everything back. Leave sturdy seed heads like coneflower, sedum and ornamental grasses standing for birds and winter interest, and only remove mushy, collapsed or diseased foliage. A pile of whole leaves tucked behind shrubs or in a back corner is fine, and it helps overwintering insects.

How to tell you're done

  • ☐ No patches of lawn are fully covered by leaves
  • ☐ Beds have 2–3 in (5–7.5 cm) of shredded leaves, pulled back from stems
  • ☐ Hoses are drained and off the faucet, and the indoor shutoff for each outdoor spigot is closed
  • ☐ Drains, fence lines and paths are clear of leaf piles

현재
Leaves are piling up on the lawn and in the beds, spent plants are flopping over, and the hoses are still connected to the outdoor faucets with a hard frost a few weeks away.
난관
First-timers often wait for every leaf to fall, then one rainy week mats a 4–6 in (10–15 cm) soggy layer that chokes the mower and leaves dead yellow patches in spring. Another common miss is leaving a hose attached, so water trapped in the spigot freezes and cracks the pipe inside the wall.
기대
The grass is visible and freshly cut, the beds are tucked under a loose layer of shredded leaves, and the hoses and faucets are drained and ready for freezing nights.
대응 지침
  • When the mower starts choking, leaving clumps, or stalling in thick leaves
    →
Shut off the engine and wait for the blade to stop before clearing the deck, then raise the deck to its highest setting for a first pass and lower it to your final height for a second pass.
  • When the leaves are still damp from dew or yesterday's rain
    →
Do the bed cutback and hose work first, and save mowing for after the leaves are dry enough to crunch underfoot.
  • When you find leaves spotted with black spot, scab or mildew (common under roses and fruit trees)
    →
Bag those leaves for yard-waste pickup instead of mulching them, so the disease doesn't overwinter in your beds.

단계
  1. 01
Rake corners and fence lines onto the open lawn
Rake or blow leaves out of fence lines, paths, drains and under shrubs into a thin layer on the open lawn, picking out sticks and stones the mower would throw.
    ⏱ 40분
  2. 02
    Mulch-mow the lawn
Mow the dry leaves in overlapping passes at your final height until at least half the grass shows, then make a second pass with the bagger to collect surplus shreds for the beds.
    ⏱ 1시간
  3. 03
Cut back mushy or diseased perennials
Snip collapsed or spotted foliage to 2–3 in (5–7.5 cm) stubs and pull frost-killed annuals, but leave sturdy seed heads and ornamental grasses standing.
    ⏱ 40분
  4. 04
Spread shredded leaves over the beds
Dump the bagged shreds or tarp loads into the beds and spread 2–3 in (5–7.5 cm) around plants, keeping a 3 in (7.5 cm) gap around stems and trunks, and bag any diseased leaves instead.
    ⏱ 40분
  5. 05
Drain hoses and shut off outdoor faucets
Disconnect and drain each hose and store it in the garage or shed, close the indoor shutoff, then open the outdoor spigot and leave it open all winter (frost-free spigots or taps without an indoor valve just need the hose off).
