Flying Home for Thanksgiving with Only a Carry-On

by MASTER
Packing carry-on only lets you skip checked-bag fees and the bag-drop line during the busiest travel week of the year. Do this packing session two or three days before you fly, so there's time to buy a travel-size item or fix a fare problem.

Flying Home for Thanksgiving with Only a Carry-On

Check the rules before you touch your clothes

The most common first-timer mistake is packing a perfect roller bag and then finding out the ticket is basic economy. United's basic economy allows only a personal item that fits under the seat on most routes. Spirit and Frontier charge extra for a full-size carry-on on their cheapest fares. Confirm your allowance first, because it decides everything else.

  • Typical US carry-on limit: 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 36 x 23 cm), wheels and handles included
  • Typical personal-item limit: about 17 x 10 x 9 in (43 x 25 x 23 cm), but check your airline
  • UK, European and Australian airlines often add a weight cap, commonly 7–10 kg (15–22 lb)
  • Liquids follow the 3-1-1 rule: containers of 3.4 oz (100 mL) or less, all in one quart-size (1 L) clear bag

Outfit math for a 4–5 day trip

Pick one color family, such as navy, gray and denim, so every top works with every bottom. A reliable formula is 2 bottoms, 4 tops, 1 sweater, 1 dinner outfit, 2 pairs of shoes max. You wear one of those pairs on the plane. Pack underwear and socks for every day. Everything else can be re-worn, or you can run one load of laundry at your family's place.

Spend your time on this planning step. Skip folding tricks, because rolling versus folding saves far less space than leaving out a third pair of shoes.

Pack heavy at the bottom, essentials within reach

Put shoes and the toiletry kit at the wheel end, and roll the soft clothes on top. Your personal item gets anything you can't lose if the roller gets gate-checked on a full flight: ID, medications, chargers, power bank, laptop, a snack and your liquids bag. Keeping liquids there makes the security bin faster.

Wear your bulkiest pieces on travel day, like boots, a coat and the sweater. That frees more room than any packing trick.

Bring gifts unwrapped or in gift bags, because screeners may need to open them. Wrap them once you arrive. Leave a gap of about two rolled shirts' worth of space for whatever comes home with you.

Since you pack days early, write a short last-morning list on a sticky note on the bag for the things you're still using. That usually means toothbrush, phone charger, glasses or contacts, and daily meds.

How to know you're done

Check all of these:

  • The bag zips without you sitting on it.
  • It slides into the airline's sizing frame, or measures within limits with a tape.
  • You can lift it to overhead-bin height by yourself. Two hands is fine, but you shouldn't need help.
  • Your liquids bag closes flat.

If any of these fails, take one item out. Don't force it.

현재
My trip home is coming up, I haven't confirmed what my ticket allows, and my clothes, toiletries and gifts are spread around with no plan to fit them into one bag.
난관
The bag gets turned away or charged at the gate because the fare was basic economy with no full-size carry-on. Or a jar of homemade cranberry sauce or a bottle of wine gets pulled at the TSA checkpoint for being over 3.4 oz (100 mL).
기대
One carry-on and one personal item are packed within my airline's size limits, my liquids are in a single quart bag, and my travel-day outfit is laid out by the door.
대응 지침
  • When the gate agent announces the overhead bins are full and offers free gate-checking of roller bags
    →
Before handing it over, move medications, ID, chargers, any power banks or spare lithium batteries, and electronics into your personal item, because lithium batteries can't travel in checked bags.
  • When family offers to send you home with leftovers, gravy, cranberry sauce or a bottle of wine
    →
Accept solid foods like pie, turkey slices and stuffing, which can go through security, but leave behind or ship anything pourable or spreadable over 3.4 oz (100 mL), since TSA treats cranberry sauce and jam as liquids.
  • When the bag won't zip closed
    →
Remove the bulkiest item and plan to wear it on the plane, or cut a pair of shoes, rather than forcing the zipper or opening an expansion zipper that pushes you over the size limit.
