Weatherstripping Drafty Doors and Windows

by MASTER
A few strips of foam or rubber and a door sweep can stop most of the cold air leaking around doors and windows, and the work takes an afternoon. Do it on a mild fall day before the first hard frost (October or early November in most of the US, UK and Canada; April or May in Australia), while it's still warm enough for adhesive to stick.

Weatherstripping Drafty Doors and Windows

Match the seal to the gap, not the other way round

Most failed jobs come from the wrong thickness, so measure the gap first. Wrap a small ball of modeling clay in plastic wrap and press it against the door stop. Close the door gently, then measure the squashed clay. Choose a seal that is slightly thicker than the gap, so it compresses by about a third to a half when closed. Common choices:

  • Open-cell or closed-cell foam tape: cheapest and easiest. Good for windows that don't open in winter and for uneven gaps. Expect 1-2 seasons.
  • EPDM rubber profiles (adhesive-backed, sold as E-, P- or D-profile): the best default for door jambs and casement windows. Profile letters don't mean the same size across brands, so pick by the gap range printed on the pack. Roughly, E suits thin gaps of about 1/16-1/8 in (2-3 mm), and P and D cover about 1/8-1/4 in (3-7 mm). Lasts 5+ years.
  • V-strip (tension seal), vinyl or bronze: fits the side channels of sliding and double-hung sashes, where a squashy seal would stop the sash from moving. Set it with the open side of the V facing outdoors so wind pushes it tighter.
  • Kerf weatherstrip: if your door frame has a thin slot in the stop with an old seal in it, pull out a piece and take it to the store to match. It pushes in with no adhesive.

Prep is the step people skip, and it's the one that matters

Adhesive fails on dust, old residue and cold surfaces. Clean every contact strip with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Apply when the surface is at least 50°F (10°C); on a cold day, warm the jamb with a hair dryer for a minute first. Scrape off old foam and glue completely, because new tape stuck on top of old tape peels off within weeks. Spend your time here and on measuring; cutting and sticking goes fast. A common shortcut is to split the job: hunt drafts and measure one evening, shop with your list, then clean and install on the mild day.

Options for renters, budgets and older windows

  • Renting: foam tape, rope caulk and slide-on or under-door draft stoppers (a draught excluder or door snake in the UK and Australia) all come off without damage. Screw-on sweeps and kerf seals usually need the landlord's OK.
  • Tight budget: do the worst door plus the windows in the rooms you heat most. One door sweep and one roll of foam often fix most of what you feel.
  • Old single-pane or rattly sashes you never open in winter: after weatherstripping, add a window shrink-film kit on the inside.
  • Air leaking where the trim meets the wall, not where the sash meets the frame: that needs caulk, not weatherstripping. Note it and handle it separately.

How to tell it worked

Repeat the smoke test, then close the door or sash on a strip of paper (or a dollar bill) at several points. It should drag when you pull it out, not slide free. The door must still latch without shoving or lifting, and opening sashes must slide with normal hand pressure. If the door now needs a shoulder push, the seal is too thick on the latch side.

현재
Cold air leaks in around at least one exterior door and several windows, the rooms near them feel chilly, and you don't yet know exactly where the gaps are or how big they are.
난관
Foam tape bought by guesswork turns out too thick, so the door won't latch and the tape gets ripped off. Or the strip goes onto a cold, dusty jamb and peels away within a week.
기대
The paper test drags at every point around the door and windows, no smoke wavers at the seams, the door still latches with a normal push, and the rooms near them feel noticeably less drafty.
대응 지침
  • When the door won't latch, or needs a hard push to close, after the new seal is on
    →
Peel back the strip on the latch side and replace it with the next thinner profile (and the hinge side too if it's also tight), and try this before moving the strike plate.
  • When the gap is wide at the top of the door and almost nothing at the bottom (or the reverse)
    →
Use the profile rated for the larger gap, or thicker foam, only on the wide section and the thinner profile elsewhere, butting the two pieces tightly together.
  • When the smoke test shows air coming through the wall trim or around the outside of the window frame rather than the moving parts
    →
Mark that spot with painter's tape for a separate caulking job and move on, because weatherstripping won't seal it.

    Find the drafts
On a breezy or cold day, close all windows and switch on the bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans to pull air through the gaps. Then move a lit incense stick slowly along each door and window seam (keeping it away from curtains) and mark every spot where the smoke wavers with painter's tape.

  2. 02
    Measure gaps and lengths
Use the clay-in-plastic-wrap trick to get each gap's thickness, measure each run that needs sealing, and write both down before buying so you pick the right profile.

  3. 03
Strip and clean the contact surfaces
Scrape off old seal and residue, wipe with rubbing alcohol and let it dry, then check that the surface is at least 50°F (10°C) to the touch.

  4. 04
    Apply the weatherstrip
Cut each piece to length, peel the backing about 12 in (30 cm) at a time, and press the strip against the stop face the door or sash closes on, keeping corners tightly butted with no gaps.

Fit the door sweep and retest
Cut the sweep to width (knife for vinyl, hacksaw for aluminum) and screw it to the inside face of an inward-opening door so the seal just brushes the threshold. Then repeat the smoke and paper tests and check that the door latches with a normal push.
