Annual Performance Self-Review
내용 미리보기
Collect evidence before you write a word
The most common first-timer mistake is opening the review form and typing from memory. Memory favors the last six weeks and forgets January. Spend the biggest block of time on evidence gathering. Scroll your calendar month by month. Search your sent mail and chat for words like "shipped", "launched", "thanks" and "fixed". Check your project tracker for closed items. Drop every find into one rough list. Don't polish anything yet, because writing goes fast once the facts are in front of you.
If you kept a running "brag doc" this year, start there and only fill the gaps. If you have just one evening, skip the full sweep. Pull your top 3 projects plus any thank-you messages, and accept a shorter review.
Write for the person who has to defend you
In many companies your manager pastes your words into calibration meetings with other managers. Give them sentences they can reuse:
- Lead with the result, then say what you did: "Cut invoice processing from 5 days to 2 by rebuilding the approval workflow."
- Attach a number wherever one exists: dollars, hours saved, % change, customers, tickets or deadlines met. If there's no metric, describe the scope instead: team size, budget or how many people relied on it.
- Say "I" for your part and name the team for theirs. Constant "we" hides your contribution.
- Map each win to the goal or competency it proves, using the form's own wording.
Pick 3–5 strong accomplishments over a list of 15 small ones. Bullets work for goal-based forms. Short paragraphs suit competency or values-based forms, which are common in UK appraisals.
Draft in a separate document, not in the HR system. Many review tools time out and lose unsaved text. A saved copy also gives you next year's starting point.
Handle growth areas and ratings honestly
For development areas, name one real skill gap, the step you've already taken on it, and what you'll do next year. A fake weakness ("I work too hard") reads as evasive.
If the form asks you to rate yourself, read the company's rating definitions and choose the rating your evidence supports. Managers rarely raise a self-rating, so underselling can anchor you low.
Know when it's done
It's done when you can tick off these checks:
- Every goal from last year has an answer.
- Every claim has a fact or number behind it.
- Each answer fits the field. Roughly 100–250 words per question is typical, but follow the form's own limit.
Read it aloud once. If a sentence would confuse someone outside your team, rewrite it. If you can, have a trusted colleague skim it for 10 minutes. Remove confidential figures before sharing it outside your reporting line. Submit at least a day early.
- When you can't find a hard number for an accomplishment→Estimate conservatively and label it ("about 4 hours a week saved"), or state the scope instead: people affected, budget size, or what would have broken without you.
- When a goal was missed, cut or changed mid-year→Say so in one plain sentence, then explain what changed, what you delivered instead, and the one lesson you're carrying into next year.
- When the form asks you to give yourself a rating→Choose the rating your listed evidence supports against the company's rating definitions, not the one that feels modest.
- • Last year's goals or objectives — 1 copy
- • Review form and rating guide — 1 copy
- 01Sweep the year for evidenceGo month by month through your calendar, sent mail, chat and project tracker, pasting every win, launch, fix and thank-you into one rough list in a separate document without editing it.⏱ 45분
- 02Pick and map your top winsChoose the 3–5 items with the biggest measurable impact and note which goal or competency each one proves, using the form's exact wording.⏱ 30분
- 03Draft the accomplishment answersWrite each win as result first, then what you did, then the number or scope, using "I" for your own contribution and keeping the draft in your separate document so an HR-system timeout can't erase it.⏱ 45분
- 04Write growth areas and next-year goalsName one real skill gap with a step you've already taken, then propose 2–3 next-year goals that each have a measurable finish line such as a date, a number or a deliverable.⏱ 25분
- 05Edit, check length and submitConfirm every past goal is addressed, trim each answer to the form's limit (often about 100–250 words), read it aloud once, paste it into the HR system and submit at least a day early.⏱ 20분
